This article contains the steps to configure Windows 2000 to connect to EarthLink. These steps also work for an ISDN connection.

Requirements

The settings for the particular domain (i.e. earthlink.net, mindspring.com, etc.) which can be found on the Domain Listing page in order to complete this walkthrough.
In order to configure the Dial-Up connection, local accesss number are located on the Access Number Search page.

How to Configure Windows 2000 to Connect to EarthLink

Click the Start button. Click Settings and choose Control Panel.
Double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon.
Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
Click the Next button.
Select Dial-up to the Internet.
Click the Next button.
Select I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN).
Click the Next button.
Select I connect through a phone line and a modem.
Click the Next button.
Click the down arrow on the Select a modem to use to connect to the Internet drop-down list and choose your modem.
Click the Next button.
Uncheck the box next to Use area code and dialing rules.
In the Telephone number field, type your local EarthLink access number. An access number can be found on our Access Number Search page.

Note:
- Remember to check with your local telephone company to make sure that the access number you choose is a local toll-free call.
- When you enter the access number, type it exactly as you would dial it from your home phone.
- Do not include a 1 or the area code unless you have to dial it to make a local call from your home telephone.
- If you are dialing from a hotel, office, or other phone system that requires you to dial a digit such as 9 to get an outside line, insert that number before the access number.
- To disable call waiting while using the internet, insert the call waiting defeat code (usually *70) before the access number. Note: only insert this code if you have call waiting on the line you will connect with. Check with your phone company to determine which code to use for your line.
- Ignore the Area Code field. All numbers, including 9, 1, area code, or *70 should be entered in the Telephone Number field.
Click the Next button.
In the User name field type the entire email address (e.g., johndoe@earthlink.net).
In the Password field type the account password.

Note: Remember, your password is case sensitive. (Make sure your CAPS LOCK button is off!)
Click the Next button.
In the Connection Name field type the domain name (i.e. EarthLink).
Click the Next button.
Click the No radio button in the Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now area.
Click the Next button.
Uncheck the box next to To connect to the Internet immediately....
Click the Finish button.
Click Settings and choose Control Panel from the Start menu.
Double-click the Network and Dial-Up Connections icon.
Right-click your EarthLink Dial-Up connection and select Create Shortcut from the pop-up menu.
Click the Yes button to create a shortcut on the desktop.

Close all windows.

Congratulations! You have successfully set up an Internet connection to EarthLink.
