Protection Control Center - Configuring Firewall Settings

Follow the steps below to configure the firewall settings in Protection Control Center

Firewall Levels in the Protection Control Center

There are four Firewall settings in Protection Control Center. Click on an entry below to skip to a description of the level, or scroll down to see all levels.
  1. Off
  2. Standard
  3. High
  4. Customized
Description of Firewall Levels
  1. OFF - This setting allows traffic flow in and out of the computer unrestricted.

  2. Standard - This setting allows a pre-set list of programs access to the internet and allows responses in to those programs. They are:
    • Internet Explorer
    • Netscape
    • FireFox
    • Microsoft Outlook and Express
    • Thunderbird
    • Eudora
    • MSN Instant Messenger
    • AOL Instant Messenger
    • Microsoft FTP Client
    • Microsoft AutoUpdate
    • Microsoft Windows Update
    • MSN Toolbar
    • Real Player
    • MSN Media 10
    • Yahoo Messenger
    • Napster
    • iTunes
    • MusicMatch
    • EarthLink software (TotalAccess, etc.)

  3. High - This setting blocks all applications from communicating out, and incoming communication is blocked. Each time a communication is initiated, you have the option to allow or deny it. You may also check a box to “allow always.”

  4. Customized - This setting allows one customized profile. It automatically adds new exceptions to the list when you click to “allow always” from alerts. Protection Control Center saves the Customized setting if you switch to one of the other Firewall settings, allowing one-click return to the Customized settings.

    Click the Add, Edit, and Delete buttons to further customize the firewall settings, such as allowing specific IP addresses to access your computer through certain applications, ports, or protocols.
