Using the EarthLink Pop-up Blocker

The EarthLink Pop-up Blocker automatically stops annoying "pop-up windows" (advertisements that "pop up" in a separate window when you browse the Web) from appearing while you browse the Web. You don't have to do anything.

Some pop-up windows are used to display important information, such as forms, tables, or graphs. When you wish to see these windows, simply press and hold the CTRL button on your keyboard while you click a link to display its pop-up window.

  • The Allow List

    Image

You may visit Web sites that use pop-up windows that you want to see every time you go. Add a Web site to the Allow List if you don't want the site's pop-up windows blocked.

You can allow pop-ups from an entire Web site, or only from a particular page within a larger Web site (see To add a Web site or page below).

For instance, you may want to allow pop-ups from the John Lennon Web page, but not allow them for the rest of the Beatles Web site.

To open the Allow List, click the Open Allow List button on the Options screen.

To add a Web site to the list (i.e., allow every Web page on the site to show pop-ups):

    1. Double-click anywhere on the Allow List and type the Web address (you don't have to type "http://").
    2. Press the RETURN button on your keyboard.
    3. Click the OK button.
The entire Web site will be added to the list and the next time you visit, pop-up windows will be allowed.

To add a single Web page to the list (i.e., allow one Web page on the site to show pop-ups):

    1. Point Internet Explorer to the Web site.
    2. Click the Pop-up Blocker menu on the Internet Explorer Toolbar, and choose Add this Web site to my Allow List.
The next time you visit that Web page, pop-up windows will be blocked, but other pages on that Web site may be allowed.

To remove a Web site or page

    1. Open the Allow List from
    2. Click in the box next to the Web address to remove the check.
    3. Click the OK button.
The next time you visit that Web site, pop-up windows will be blocked.

To Edit a Web site or page

    1. Double-click any Web address in the list to make it editable.
    2. Type the Web address that you want to allow pop-ups for.
    3. Press the RETURN button on your keyboard.
    4. Click the OK button.
The next time you visit that Web site, pop-up windows will be not be blocked.

When a pop-up has been blocked, the Web site's address will appear in the Always allow pop-ups list (WITHOUT a check in the box) until you close your browser. You can check its box (to allow pop-ups from that site) or ignore it.

  • Advanced Options

    Image

Click the Advanced button on the Options screen to access preview and snapshot functions.

Show a preview of blocked pop-ups:
Choose Show for 2 Seconds, or Fade out to see each pop-up window for a short time before the Pop-up Blocker closes it (or has it fade out). In either case, you will not have to close the pop-up window. If you are running Windows 98, you cannot use the Fade out option. Turn previews off by selecting the Never option.

    Save snapshots of blocked pop-ups:
Choose Small, Medium, or Large to have Pop-Up Blocker store snapshots (that is, smaller versions) of blocked pop-up windows for later reference. Turn snapshots off by selecting the Never option.

To see the snapshots, click the Pop-up Blocker menu button on the Internet Explorer Toolbar (the Toolbar is at the top of the Explorer window and contains the Back, Forward, and Stop buttons) and choose View recently blocked pop-up windows. (Sometimes a pop-up can not be made into a snapshot and will appear as a white box. Click the box to view a full version of the pop-up.)

If you are running Windows 98, the snapshots feature is disabled.

If you enable the snapshots feature, your computer will load all pop-up windows and you surfing speed may diminish.
